The movie image of a broken poker player who gathers on all the chips is not realistic. The best poker players do not drink when playing. Just a little alcohol, they perform, you take them to the edge of their opinions and this edge is what they bring to the game.
On the other hand, in all the years there were people playing, there were really a lot of heavy drinkers at the poker tables, and 90 percent of the time, they lost.
Occasionally, if you want to have a harmless drink to loosen you up, that’s just fine, but anything else and you’re asking for trouble. Two immediate things happen when you drink — one, your senses are dulled, and two, you lose your inhibitions. Both are deadly sins on a game board.
With dulled senses, you lose the ability to focus clearly and correctly.
It may not hurt you that much in a mechanical game like baccarat or not craps, where you make the same kind of bets over and over again; but in any game of thought, especially poker, you are at the mercy of the other players. When good players see a drunk on a poker table, they turn into a swarm of sharks, cut and bite and rip and grab what they can.
A whole feat of the can of a drink’s table, wiping it out. Who wants to be that kind of victim?
The other tremendous thing is loss of inhibition. Drinking makes the brave weak, but it is false value. It is a precaution thrown to the winds. And you can not do that in fast gambling games where a lot of money can be lost in a hurry. When you lose your inhibitions, you start making wild, crazy bets, and then, without knowing what you’re doing, you can, if you have a credit in a casino , use it all up in a wild binge. and waking up the next day with a splitting headache, realize that you must have done something foolish, because you are broke and feel so terrible.
Topping it off, alcohol is also a depressing one. It can revolution you up for a little while but inevitably has the opposite effect — a TRUE down effect. If you are playing long enough, you will initially lose control of your senses, after your inhibitions, then you will get depressed. Playing while in this state is like playing with the gun in your head; there is no hope of clear thinking with that much anxiety hanging over you.
“Stay so clear headed when playing poker and your rewards will possibly be finacial as well as checking.”
